NEWPORT NEWS -- Police have identified a man who was shot to death Wednesday afternoon in the city's East End.
26-year-old Brandon Mich'cal Johnson of the 1200 block of 22nd Street in Newport News was found on the sidewalk in the 2100 block of Chestnut Avenue. Police say he'd been shot in his upper body.
Because the shooting occurred about the time many schools were letting out, around 2:30 p.m., Magruder Elementary School and An Achievable Dream Academy(formerly Dunbar Elementary School) were placed on lock down for a short amount of time.
According to police spokesperson Lou Thurston, at least one bus was reportedly unloading children about a block away from the shooting.
So far, there's no information on a suspect and police are continuing to interview witnesses to the homicide.
