PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Several people are displaced following an early-morning house fire in Portsmouth.
"My son woke me up and said, 'Get out. The house is on fire,'" explained Robert Gaskins.
Firefighters were called out to the 300 block of Carver Circle just before 4 a.m. where they found a multiple-dwelling house was on fire.
Gaskins explained, "I didn't smell nothing, because my machine was on. I have a sleep apnea machine, so I didn't smell anything."
Everyone was able to get out of the house safely, which is made up of three separate units.
Kimberly Gerhart and her family just moved here less than a year ago. She told 13News Now she was watching television when she saw smoke coming out of the wall.
"I just happened to look over and saw some smoke and I sat up and smelled it and my boyfriend ran outside and he saw the smoke coming out of the windows and flames coming out of the window,” she said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the families.
"I just keep thinking how blessed I am to be alive and to get out of there," Gaskins said.
