NORFOLK, Va. — A fire at a rehabilitation facility has left one person hurt Saturday night.
Just before 7:00 p.m., Norfolk Fire Rescue crews got a call about the incident at the Consulate Health Care of Norfolk on Llewellyn Avenue. When they arrived, firefighters say they discovered an electric wheelchair that had caught fire in a resident's room.
The sprinkler system kicked in and extinguished the fire, but one person had minor burns and went to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
Once the fire was out, firefighters worked to ventilate the affected areas of the building. Residents were moved to unaffected parts of the property until the smoke cleared and everyone could return to their rooms. According to its website, Consulate Health Care provides senior healthcare services, including 24-hour skilled nursing care and Alzheimer's and dementia care.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
