Norfolk's Dog-N-Burger Grille closing after 50 years

The longtime Norfolk staple will become a BBQ joint this April.

NORFOLK, Va. — At Dog-N-Burger Grille, there’s a tradition as simple as the restaurant's name.

For the last 50 years, the Norfolk staple has been feeding hungry locals hot dogs and hamburgers for a reasonable price.

But on March 13, the Ghent restaurant will close its doors for good.

“It’s just a part of Norfolk,” said customer Cami Howard. “Dearly going to be missed.”

Howard joined hundreds of others throughout the day Friday standing in line for one last visit.

Skip Hyslop has been a customer since 1969, the first year the restaurant opened.

“Kind of like that friendly place,” said Hyslop. “Kind of like going home.”

A deal closed last month that has the current owners handing over the iconic joint to the people behind Redwood Smoke Shack, a popular up-and-coming barbecue truck.  The owner tells 13News Now his BBQ brand will move into the building next week with an opening scheduled sometime in April.

A 50-year tradition doesn’t have to have the building to live on.

Dog-N-Burger’s current owners are adding their famous D-N-B Combo, including a hot dog, a hamburger, fries and a drink, to the menu of their other restaurant No Frill Grille on Colley Avenue.
