Norfolk State University student, football player killed in Norfolk

Police have arrested a man involved in a shooting that left one person dead Friday night.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have arrested a man involved in a shooting that left a Norfolk State student and football player dead Friday night.

The shooting happened in the 800 block of Hayes Street around 6 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later identified the victim as Nicholas Ackies, 18, of Richmond. He was ID'd as a Norfolk State student and a defensive lineman for the school's football team.

During Saturday's football game there was a moment of silence in remembrance of Nicholas Ackies.

During the preliminary investigation, detectives positively identified Jaquan Anderson, 22, as the suspect.

Anderson was taken into police custody and charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His last known to reside in the 800 block of Hayes Street, and remains incarcerated without bond in the Norfolk City Jail.

Anderson used to be a NSU football player.
