NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say a woman cashed checks stolen from a friend who was trying to help her.
Tina Marie Gray, 46, allegedly got nearly $6,000 between January 9 and 25.
Spokesman Harold Eley told WVEC.com Gray stole checks from the 57-year-old man's house, forged his name and then went to his bank to cash the checks.
She was arrested Thursday evening after turning herself in on 24 charges that include obtaining money by false pretenses and forgery.
