Newport News Waterworks responds to customer complaints of bad taste and odors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Newport News Waterworks has announced that their work on the taste and smell of customers water are successful, but they aren't ready to say that their water quality event is over.

Newport News Waterworks claims that because of the extremely hot weather they have noticed an increased amount of algae counts in their reservoirs. The company believes that this increase is what is causing the bad taste and odor.

In addition to the change in treatment, Newport News Waterworks performed a direct flushing of their distribution system.

While the treatments are successful in some areas, some other customers are still and will most likely continue to have some taste and odor issues as the water from the treatment plants mixes with the water throughout the system.

If you are still having issues with your water, Waterworks suggests letting your water run for a couple minutes at each faucet and discard any ice made while the system was impacted.

Newport News Waterworks assured the public that the problem is an aesthetic concern writing:

"The water currently meets all Virginia Department of Health regulatory requirements and is safe to drink. Please by assured we are working to correct these issues as soon as possible."
