New beach parking fee in Currituck County, residents flock to get a permit

Dozens of residents are flocking to pick up beach parking permits, which were newly implemented this year.

CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC (WVEC) -- Dozens of residents are flocking to pick up beach parking permits, which were newly implemented this year.

The permits for the off-road, four-wheel drive vehicle section of the county started being issued this Wednesday at welcome centers in Moyock and Corolla.

About 100 were issued to residents in the first three days, according to county staffers.

"It was easy," said Brenda, a county resident. "The paperwork was online. You can print it off from there and then it tells you on the back of there what you need."

The permits are free for Currituck County residents, their guests or people who rent homes along the four-wheel drive section of beach, which is North of Corolla.

They cost $50 for a 10-day permit and $150 for a seasonal pass.

"I won't pay 50 bucks to go ten days if I'm not going to be here ten days," said Bob Ladd, a Kitty Hawk tourist.

County leaders implemented the fee to cut down on traffic and provide a safer environment.

"I can see why they're doing it. Understand it doesn't mean I agree with it," Ladd said.

Money collected from permits will go to the beach upkeep, according to Commission Board Chair Bobby Hanig.

Parking enforcement starts the Friday before Memorial Day and lasts until Labor Day.
