Navy seeks to hire more than 50 new civilian police officers, 911 dispatchers

Under an expedited process, new employees could start work within 30 days instead of 9 months.

NORFOLK, Va. — If you've ever thought about law enforcement, here's your chance to get your foot in the door.

Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic wants to hire more than 50 police and 911 dispatchers at all experience levels, including entry level.

Most of the dispatch positions are at Naval Station Norfolk. The police positions are more spread around the Hampton Roads area.

The hiring process for such jobs usually takes up to nine months, but in this case, the process is being expedited and people who receive job offers could be on the job and starting training within 30 days at a GS-5 pay level.

You have to be 21, a U.S. citizen, felony-free and capable of passing a background check and a physical.

Captain David Brinson, Regional Dispatch Director for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, said the Navy is ready to hire right now.

"These are entry-level positions," he said. "All that we ask is that you have six months of work experience that demonstrates you're trustworthy and reliable. If we feel somebody would be a job value asset, we'll make an offer right there on the spot."

For those interested in applying, the Navy will be hosting a public safety hiring event.

The hiring event is Friday, May 31 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Tidewater Community College Virginia Beach Campus.
