Navy ends search for sailor who went overboard USS Abraham Lincoln

The sailor, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, went overboard on the morning of July 17. The sailor remains listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown.

MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy ended its search for a sailor who went overboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

The sailor, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, went overboard on the morning of July 17, Navy officials said.

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), Patrol Squadron (VP) 10, Patrol Squadron (VP) 40 and Spanish Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Méndez Núñez conducted search and rescue operations in the Arabian Sea area where it was reported the sailor was missing, the Navy said in a news release. 

The sailor remains listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN).

The sailor’s name is being held per U.S. Navy policy.

Earlier this year, it was announced the Lincoln would relocate its homeport from Norfolk to Naval Base San Diego at the end of this deployment.
