Volunteers needed to place flags on graves ahead of Veterans Day at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery

The superintendent is hopeful to get 100 volunteers.

SUFFOLK, Va. — The state veterans cemetery in Suffolk needs help to ensure that all veterans are properly honored on Veterans Day.

Volunteers are needed to plant American flags at the 74-acre Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

The facility is home to more than 13,000 deceased veterans. The idea is to see to it that each vet gets a flag.

Flag-placement activities will take place next Thursday, November 7, starting at 9 a.m.

The cemetery's superintendent hopes to get 100 volunteers and says the job could take four hours or more.

"If they can come out, just dress comfortably. Be prepared to work. It's a lot of bending, up and, up and down basically. Once we start placing the flags we don't want to leave at the end of the day without any memorial marker having a flag in all fairness," said Angela Bufano, Horton Cemetery Superintendent.

The cemetery is also looking for volunteers to pick up the flags.

That will happen November 12, the day after Veterans Day, also at 9 a.m.
