Virginia attorney general offers free legal services for military veterans

From estate planning to setting up a will, vets got to sit down with legal experts from Attorney General Jason Miyares’ office to get their affairs sorted.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A free legal clinic courtesy of Attorney General Jason Miyares is giving veterans a chance to get free legal counsel.

Legal experts helped veterans with things like estate planning services, wills, and powers of attorney. Attorney General Chief of Staff D. J. Jordan said these can be critical documents that some vets might need assistance with.

“Oftentimes they may not have those documents, especially if they’re seniors or they served for a long time, they might not have gotten around to doing some of these very important legal documents,” Jordan said. “We want to be able to serve veterans who served us.”

Anthony Paxton is a Navy veteran and came to the clinic with his wife Alice to get help with their will.

“We’ve been putting it off for a long time so we took advantage of the opportunity to come out here and get it done,” Paxton said.

He called the clinics a big help for veterans.

“Very easy!” Paxton said. “They were very helpful and a lot of nice people here.”

In a statement, Attorney General Jason Miyares said this clinic was designed to coincide with Veterans Day.

"In honor of our veterans and in recognition of Veterans Day, I'm pleased to host another Veterans Legal Services Clinic," said Attorney General Miyares. "Our service members and veterans have devoted their lives to defending the freedoms we enjoy every day. It is a debt that cannot be repaid. Veteran services like this are the very least we can do."

Jordan said these clinics are something the Attorney General’s Office plans to repeat in the future, across the state.

“These veteran services legal clinics are something that the office of the Attorney General has done over a series of years - going back about seven years - but they’ve been inconsistent,” Jordan said. “Attorney General Jason Miyares wanted to bring these clinics back and do them on a regular basis.”

According to Jordan, about 25 veterans signed up for Tuesday's event.

Veterans interested in participating in future free legal clinics can contact the attorney general’s office at 804-371-2815 or visit www.oag.state.va.us.
