Veterans Day events in Hampton Roads

Several events are being held across Hampton Roads, including a big parade in Virginia Beach on Saturday morning.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Many groups have planned events in honor of Veterans Day on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Here are a few ideas on where to honor and celebrate those who have served across the region.

Chesapeake

Veterans Day Ceremony: The Mayor’s Commission on Veterans' Affairs proudly honors the brave men and women of our nation’s armed forces. The Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., November 11 in front of Chesapeake City Hall, 306 Cedar Road in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Hampton

Answering the Call - Veterans Day at Fort Monroe: Join us at Continental Park from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. as we honor all service members and reflect on the sacrifices that we made to protect this country. Join us as we honor those who serve with Answering the Call. Throughout the weekend there will be Living History Interpreters in Continental Park giving an immersive experience of what life was like for soldiers in various conflicts involving the United States military. It is located at 4 Fenwick Road in Hampton.

Newport News

Veterans Day Ceremony at the Virginia War Museum: Honor our veterans at this annual ceremony hosted by American Legion Braxton-Perkins Post 25. It will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Huntington Park in front of the Virginia War Museum; 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. 

Please note, in honor of the Virginia War Museum’s 100th anniversary, the Veterans Day ceremony will be held in front of the Museum this year instead of at the Victory Arch. After the ceremony, all are invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the museum with family-friendly activities, living history demos, cake, and more!

Norfolk

Veterans Day Ceremony at MacArthur Memorial: The City of Norfolk invites residents to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans with the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at MacArthur Memorial. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the memorial rotunda.

Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander will provide remarks. The featured speaker is Lieutenant General Brian W. Cavanaugh, Commander, United States Marine Corps Forces Command; Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic; and Commander, Marine Corps Forces North.

The ceremony will be at MacArthur Memorial, 198 Bank Street in Norfolk.

Veterans Day Ceremony at ODU: Old Dominion University's annual Veterans Day Observance features guest speaker Captain Janet H. Days, the Commanding Officer of Naval Station Norfolk. It will be held at 2 p.m. and is located at Kaufman Mall. In the case of inclement weather, it will be in the lobby of Webb University Center.

Show your appreciation for our Military! This event is open to members of the campus community, and all students, faculty, and staff.

Portsmouth

Veterans Day Celebration: The public is invited to attend the City of Portsmouth’s Veterans Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 11th, at the High Street Landing Flag Pole.

Virginia Beach

Tidewater Veterans Day Parade: Join the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and protected the United States at the 2023 Tidewater Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony. 

The parade starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, at 16th Street and Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach. It ends at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial at 19th Street, across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St.

Williamsburg

Veterans Day Weekend at Colonial Williamsburg: Celebrate with special events including a commemorative march and ceremony honoring America's veterans over Veterans Day weekend. Colonial Williamsburg is offering FREE admission during Veterans Day weekend, Friday through Sunday, November 10-12, to all active duty Military, Reservists, Retirees, Veterans, National Guardsmen, and their immediate dependents.

At 10 a.m. is the Veterans Day Proclamation Ceremony on Palace Green. Patriotic exercises and a memorial wreath-laying ceremony celebrating all veterans of the US Armed Forces. Held in partnership with the Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and includes music by Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums, remarks by the Colonial Williamsburg Nation Builder Marquis de Lafayette, a keynote address by Captain Christopher Melhuish who spent 27 years on active duty in the US Navy and retired as a Captain in 2007, and musket volleys. The ceremony will take place on the north end of Palace Green

Then at 3:30 p.m., attend the Military March and Military Review and Commemoration. The march and ceremony honors America's veterans and features Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums, Military Program Staff, addresses by Colonial Williamsburg Nation Builders Mrs. Washington and General Washington, and canon fire. The march begins at Capitol Circle and concludes with a commemoration service behind the Courthouse.  All armed forces veterans are welcome and encouraged to participate in the march.

Yorktown

Veterans Day Ceremony at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown: Join us as we honor our nation's veterans on Saturday, November 11 at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Free museum admission is available to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and Jamestown Settlement for veteran, active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel and up to three direct family members with military identification on Veterans Day, November 11.

The schedule of events begins at 10:50 a.m.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is located on Route 1020 in Yorktown, near Yorktown Battlefield and Historic Yorktown.
