USS Massachusetts submarine launched from HII Newport News Shipbuilding

The launch comes after the $2.8 billion vessel was christened in May 2023, marking the Navy's 25th Virginia-class nuclear submarine.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia-class submarine USS Massachusetts was recently launched into the James River from HII Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS).

According to a news release from HII, shipbuilders transferred the submarine from a construction facility to the floating dry dock. It was then submerged and moved by tugboats to a pier for final outfitting, testing, and crew certification.

The launch comes after the $2.8 billion vessel was christened in May 2023, marking the Navy's 25th Virginia-class nuclear submarine.

“Following the christening of this mighty submarine in May, witnessing Massachusetts launch into the river is a source of immense pride for our shipbuilding team,” said Jason Ward, NNS vice president of Virginia-class submarine construction. “We understand the importance of Massachusetts, and we will continue to execute with purpose to bring this important national security asset to life and deliver it to the Navy.”

HII said the Virginia-class submarines incorporated new technology and innovations that increase firepower, maneuverability, and stealth, which help with warfighting capabilities.
