USS Harry S. Truman leaves Norfolk Naval Shipyard after year of repairs

The aircraft carrier went into the shipyard last December for scheduled repairs and upgrades.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — After a year of maintenance and upgrades the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) is returning to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk.

The aircraft carrier has been at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth since last December, where it has been undergoing a Planned Incremental Availability (PIA). According to the Navy, this work includes "modernization efforts, structural repair, and preservation work."

In addition to things like computer network upgrades to the combat systems and general repairs on mechanical and electrical infrastructure, the Truman reportedly underwent "extensive work to enhance berthing spaces, gyms, barber shops, laundry areas, and entertainment spaces, along with the installation of Wi-Fi capabilities focused on the crew's quality of life," the Navy said.

This was done to help improve the physical and mental well-being of sailors serving on board.

Once the ship returns to Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday, it will begin a workup and deployment cycle, following sea trials next year.
