NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A woman is in critical condition after she fell down an elevator shaft on board the USS Kearsage.
The Navy says the incident happened Thursday around 11 a.m., when the sailor was working near the shaft and somehow fell down several decks.
She is currently at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical condition.
The Navy says it is conducting an investigation into the circumstances behind the incident
The accident happened just days after the Kearsarge moved to the BAE systems Norfolk shipyard, where it is undergoing maintenance and repairs until early next year.
BAE systems says this scheduled maintenance work helped the company avoid layoffs back in May.
