Sailor aboard USS Vella Gulf dies at sea

NORFOLK, Va. — The US Navy confirms a sailor aboard a Norfolk-based ship has died while on deployment.

The sailor served aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72). The Navy said the sailor died on Tuesday, March 10, and a cause of death is pending investigation.

The sailor's name won't be released until family is notified.

A Navy spokesperson said the Vella Gulf is currently operating in the Mediterranean Sea in support of naval operations to maintain maritime stability and security.
