Pentagon sends 1,000 active-duty troops to help fellow Americans in need following Hurricane Helene

Those soldiers will join the 6,500 National Guard personnel already on the scene in six states hammered by the storm.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense said Wednesday it is sending 1,000 active-duty soldiers to support the delivery of food, water and other critical aid to communities in six states impacted by Hurricane Helene.

That's on top of the 6,500 National Guard troops from 12 different states – including Virginia – who are already on the scene, providing critical support to the victims of the storm.

"And in the days ahead, the department will continue to keep our fellow Americans who've been impacted by this storm's devastation in our thoughts," said Major General Pat Ryder, Pentagon Press Secretary.

Additionally, the Army Corps of Engineers is providing emergency power in North Carolina and Georgia – and conducting dam, levy and bridge inspections in Tennessee and Kentucky.
