Norfolk-based Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG arrives in Mediterranean Sea after traveling through Suez Canal

Navy officials say the nuclear-powered flagship aircraft carrier entered the Mediterranean after traveling through the Suez Canal on Friday.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk-based Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKECSG) has arrived in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to a release from the Navy.

Navy officials said the nuclear-powered flagship aircraft carrier and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely entered the Mediterranean after traveling through the Suez Canal on Friday.

"The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group has delivered exceptional naval power in the U.S. 5th Fleet for the last five months," said Rear Adm. Marc Miguez, commander, CSG-2, IKECSG. "Reentry into the U.S. 6th Fleet is only a small gesture of our ability to project combat superiority to any part of the globe."

Navy officials said the Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG operated in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Gulf among others while in the U.S. 5th Fleet. The CSG assisted in shooting down seven Houthi UAVs in the Red Sea in early February.
