HAMPTON, Va. — To mark Veterans Day, the Navy showcased its Nimitz Virtual Reality Experience to high school and college students at Hampton University.
It simulates an actual high-speed Navy SEAL mission. Participants put on a VR headset and use a steering wheel and throttle system to feel like they're actually piloting a high-speed boat while extracting Navy SEALs.
"When kids get an opportunity for hands-on experience, interact, speak with recruiters -- particularly here at Hampton -- you talk about academic and education experiences," said retired Commander Robert Clements, who is a Naval Science JROTC instructor. It's always important for kids to experience real-life involvement and activities.
Ambassadors from the Navy and other military branches were on campus to engage with students and make sure they understood STEM career opportunities that are available in the armed forces.
In addition to the VR experience, the Navy also had an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter on campus along with crew from Naval Station Norfolk to speak with students.
