Navy cuts ribbon on new high-tech training center in Virginia Beach, named after retired captain and Top Gun graduate

Live, virtual, constructive training at center replicates intense, difficult training environments crews might face while deployed.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Navy cut the ribbon Tuesday on an important new high-tech training facility at Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach. It's called the Hefti Global Operations Center.

The 45,000-square-foot structure provides live, virtual and constructive (LVC) training to replicate intense and difficult training environments.

The center was dedicated in honor of retired Navy Captain and Top Gun graduate John "Bag" Hefti, who died in a car accident in 2021.

Navy leaders say the work done at the center is crucial.

"LVC is a game-changer. 'Bag' knew it, believed in it and was all in. But LVC doesn't just train the warfighters on the ships at sea. It trains the decision-makers like me and my staff by allowing the fleet commanders to synchronize their operations to fight globally, which any peer fight will obviously require," said Admiral Daryl Caudle, U.S. Fleet Forces Command commander.

The Navy says the LVC training was used to prepare USS Dwight D. Eisenhower for the aircraft carrier's current deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Operations.
