Hampton Roads cities among best places for veterans to live, according to study

Livability, affordability and veteran-friendly initiatives were all factors when making the list, WalletHub says.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — With such a large military presence in Hampton Roads, it's no surprise that two cities in the area made WalletHub's list of best places for veterans to live.

WalletHub considered 19 key factors, including livability, affordability, and veteran-friendly initiatives, when compiling the list ranking 100 of the largest cities across the U.S.

Virginia Beach slid into the top 5, with the study ranking it with an overall score of 66.66. It was rated as one of the top cities for lowest veteran unemployment rates.

Virginia Beach was also reported to have one of the lowest percentages of veterans living in poverty, according to WalletHub, only being topped by Chesapeake.

Coming in at No. 18 was Chesapeake with a score of 62.33 overall. Similarly to Virginia Beach, Chesapeake was also reported to have a low veteran unemployment rate.

Norfolk also made the list, ranking as No. 70.

All three Hampton Roads cities listed were ranked among the cities with the highest veteran population, with Virginia Beach and Chesapeake ranking as No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Raleigh, N.C. topped the list of best places for veterans to live, while Detroit, Michigan came in last place.
