Groundbreaking for new Va. Beach veterans care center

Governor McAuliffe visits Virginia Beach in honor of new care center for veterans.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Governor Terry McAuliffe and Virginia Beach Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. led city and military veteran leaders in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Car Center on Wednesday.

The 128-bed state-of-the-art facility will be built in Virginia Beach on a 26-acre site near the intersection of Nimmo Parkway and West Neck Road, on land which was donated by the city.

The Jones & Cabacoy Care Center will be an in-patient residential care facility. It will provide skilled nursing, Alzheimer's/Dementia memory and short-term rehabilitation.

Governor McAuliffe said no other state is providing this type of service for veterans.

"We are the first state to offer health care for those individuals that just can't get to a VA facility. That shows that we are doing what's right in the Commonwealth of Virginia," said McAuliffe.

The Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center is named in honor of two war heroes. Colonel William A. Jones III was a Norfolk-born air commando who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1970 by President Nixon for fearlessly risking his own life to save the life of another officer in Vietnam. Sergeant Christopher F. Cabacoy was a Virginia Beach native who died in 2010 while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2020.
