VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana and their furry friends gathered Monday to celebrate one of their top dogs.

Military Working Dog (MWD) Misa X408 is retiring after nine years of service working as an explosive detection dog.

With their own working dogs at their side, Navy Security Forces from Hampton Roads and officers with the Virginia Beach Police Department attended the canine's farewell.

“Just as this is the end of one phase in Misa’s life, it is the beginning of another,” said NAS Oceana’s Kennel Master, Master-At-Arms 1st Class Vince Nicholford. “Our gathering today gives us the opportunity to wish her every success in the future as she looks forward to a comfortable couch to rest on and endless love."

MWD Misa began her service at Lackland Air Force Base in Antonio, Texas where she was assigned to the 341st Military Working Dog Training Squadron. For the majority of her service, MWD Misa has been with Navy Security Forces at NAS Oceana and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. She also accompanied one of her handlers in deploying to Kuwait and Syria.

During her near-decade career, NAS Oceana says MWD Misa taught five military working dog handlers.
