VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana has received several recent reports of drone sightings in the area, according to a public affairs officer for the base.
Despite the reports of drones flying over the naval base, officials confirmed Friday that "nothing unusual or unscheduled was detected in NAS Oceana’s air space."
One 13News Now viewer who lives near the base said they saw between six and 12 drones flying there this week. Another viewer shared a video with 13News Now of what they believed were drones flying near the base in November.
NAS Oceana officials told 13News Now it works closely with federal and state agencies to ensure the safety of personnel and operations.
"The installation remains prepared to respond to any potential risks, leveraging robust security measures and advanced detection capabilities," the NAS Oceana public affairs officer said.
NAS Oceana officials also said that the community should report any suspicious activity near the base to local police.
U.S. Senator and Senate Armed Services Committee member Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said he is "concerned" about ongoing reports of unidentified drones flying over U.S. air space. For 17 consecutive days last December, drones were spotted near or over Langley Air Force Base in Hampton.
“I am concerned. In the Langley case, the fact that the drones were swarming near the base caused the postponement of training missions, F-22 flight training missions there, so it interrupted important training exercises at Langey for a period of time. So yeah, I'm definitely concerned," he said on Thursday.
There have been other mysterious drone sightings reported in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
