Democrats launch 'Veterans for Biden-Harris' coalition, Trump supporters stage counter-rally

Biden backers say former President Trump is a threat to democracy. Trump fans blame Biden for troop deaths during withdrawal from Afghanistan.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Mobilizing the veteran vote, Democrats rallied in Virginia Beach Tuesday, launching the "Veterans for Biden-Harris" coalition.

They said that President Joe Biden has military families' backs.

And they said, former President Donald Trump does not.

They said Trump poses a threat to democracy and endangers the freedoms they fought to protect.

"Because of the 'suckers and losers' comment," said Navy veteran Susan Hippen.

13News Now pointed out that during the recent debate, Trump denied making the remark.

Hippen replied: "He does, but he says a lot of things he didn't say, and we find out from people around him that he has actually said these things. And that's not right."

State Delegate Michael Feggans is an Air Force veteran.

He said of Trump: "He is totally unfit to be commander-in-chief. As someone who had to serve under him, he does not understand service. He's consistently against the Constitution. He always talks down to veterans."

But a group of counter-protestors who support Trump had an entirely different message.

Mere steps away, they made their voices heard.

Palmer Canada, although not a veteran himself, said vets and other Trump backers are angry about the U.S. troops who died on Biden's watch during the military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"We remember what happened on August 26, 2021, when the disastrous Biden Administration abandoned 13 members of our fine military," he said.

Navy wife Ampy Young said Biden has taken away benefits from vets.

13News Now pointed out:  "In fairness to Biden, he signed the PACT Act. It's not like he's done nothing for veterans."

But Young replied: "Well apparently what's happening now is the exact opposite."
