USCG Cutter Seneca returns to Portsmouth after Eastern Pacific patrol

The crew returned from a 61-day counter-drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Portsmouth-based U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Seneca (WMEC 906) is back home following a two-month deployment.

The crew was on a 61-day counter-drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. During their patrol, the Seneca crew helped Costa Rican forces stop a vessel carrying illegal drugs. The Coast Guard said about 3,300 pounds of marijuana, valued at more than $3 million, was seized.

The cutter's missions typically are counter-drug and migrant interdiction operations, enforcement of laws and treaties, and search and rescue in support of U.S. Coast Guard operations throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Before Portsmouth was Seneca's home base, the 270-foot cutter was based in Boston for 33 years. The Seneca is the sixth of 13 Famous Class Medium Endurance Cutters and was commissioned in 1987.
