Ship that crashed into Baltimore Bridge set to leave Norfolk Thursday

The Dali will head to China after departing from the Port of Virginia Thursday morning.
During transportation, the Coast Guard has a temporary safety zone around Dali. The ship is at the Virginia International Gateway to offload 1,500 cargo containers.

NORFOLK, Va. — The cargo ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore earlier this year is set to depart from Norfolk Thursday morning after spending months at the Port of Virginia.

The Dali has been docked in there since June, undergoing repairs following the deadly crash that killed six construction members.

According to the Department of Justice, the ship was originally slated to depart for China on Sept. 17. However, port officials now confirm the ship will set sail at 6 a.m.

The move comes as the Justice Department announced it’s seeking $100 million from the Dali's Singapore-based owners, alleging they were aware of the ship's issues prior to the crash in March.

“Those responsible for the vessel must be held fully accountable for the catastrophic harm they caused, and punitive damages should be imposed to deter such misconduct,” attorneys wrote in the court filing.
