VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- As storms moved into Hampton Roads Sunday, people at the annual Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival made their way out of the park.
The Parks and Recreations Department closed the carnival ahead of schedule because of lightning.
"Closing early for security is one thing, certainly. You don't want anybody to be in danger in high winds or anything," said Vanessa Jennings, who was at the carnival and saw the lightning.
Although the activity wrapped up before the scheduled closing time of 10 p.m., people who attended the carnival told 13News Now the threat of severe weather didn't seem to deter people from coming.
Jennings and Charles Wood got to the park around 8:30 p.m., so they only were able to enjoy it for a short time.
"It's too bad, but I only live one exit up, so I can always come back," said Wood.
Carnival workers said anyone who bought tickets can use them anytime.
The carnival should open at 6 p.m. Monday, as scheduled.
