NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- Up to 1,000 workers are expected to be added to Newport News Shipbuilding's Virginia-class attack submarine construction program as production increases to two subs per year.
Huntington Ingalls spokeswoman Christie Miller tells The Virginian-Pilot that the work force increase will occur over several years. It will include both new hires and transfers of current employees from other shipbuilding programs.
Miller says about 3,500 people currently are working in the Virginia-class sub program.
Newport News is a unit of Huntington Ingalls.
