NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man is in custody in connection with a shooting that left one man seriously hurt late Wednesday evening, Newport News police said.
Michael Keller, 36, of Hayes, is identified by police as the person involved in the shooting. Police secured multiple felony warrants for Keller, Assistant PIO Brandon Maynard said in a news release.
Police initiated a "tactical situation" around 5:51 a.m. and Keller was taken into custody on Canon Boulevard at Signature Contracting LLC.
The shooting happened around 11:27 p.m. in the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road across the street from Hoss's Deli, police said.
Officers found a 23-year-old man seriously hurt from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital.
Police confirm Keller was employed by Signature Contracting LLC. Police said Keller had a domestic dispute and the victim came over to try and intervene before shooting the victim.
Hunter Carr works at Peninsula Electric Motor on Bluecrab Road and shared a video with 13News Now that shows SWAT officers and Keller in handcuffs.
Denasia Mireles works at Integrity Staffing Services, just a few feet away from where Keller barricaded himself. She said police blocked off Canon Boulevard for several hours.
"My first thought was what is going on all I saw were police lights," Mireles said. "This was so close to home, he was two doors down from my business so it was pretty random."
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew credits not only his officers but community members and business owners who played a key role in helping them identify Keller.
"The owner provided information, and that is what we talk when we talk about community policing, everyone plays a role," Chief Drew said.
Friends of the victim said he is 23-year-old, Steven Barton. They describe Barton as a genuine person.
Friends said they are making #bartonstrong stickers, and the donations made from the stickers will go towards Barton and his family.
Anyone interested in purchasing a sticker can contact Justin Hayes on Facebook.
