YORKTOWN, Va. — The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office (YPSO) is warning residents to be cautious of scam callers.

After a criminal with a "fake country accent" called people pretending to be Deputy West with York County, YPSO issued a scam alert. The impersonator told people the Sheriff's Office had a warrant out for their arrest, demanded they pay a fine and threatened families if they refused to pay. The man also claimed people wound need to do a DNA swab and a photo lineup.

YPSO said the Sheriff's Office will never call and demand money, especially to pay fines in gift cards.

People are advised to be smart and try their best to avoid falling for this scam.
