YORKTOWN, Va. — The first ever York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office (YPSO) K-9 died after a battle with cancer.
YPSO held a "celebration of life" to honor the department's K-9, Saber, after he died of cancer at seven years old.
In November, Saber underwent emergency surgery to remove tumors in his chest, lungs, and spleen. During the surgery, a veterinarian found that the cancer spread all over his body and further treatments were not viable.
Saber spent his last days with his handler Sgt. Brett Schultz.
13News Now featured Sgt. Schultz and Saber last year, after Saber assisted with a mutual aid call and alerted law enforcement about a suspect's car, "which ended up yielding a significant amount of meth and possible fentanyl pills and a large amount of cash," Schultz said at the time.
