Driver dies after running off York County roadway twice, VSP says

The 30-year-old driver, who was the only one inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — A driver died in York County after running off the roadway twice, fatally striking a tree late Friday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

Aaron Hoopingarner was heading north on Goodwin Neck Road shortly before 4:30 p.m. when police say he attempted to pass two vehicles — crossing into the southbound lanes. That's when VSP says the 30-year-old lost control of his vehicle, running off the roadway and into a traffic sign.

As Hoopingarner was regaining control he purportedly overcorrected, resulting in him driving off the roadway again and hitting a tree just north of Back Creek Park.

Hoopingarner, who was the only one inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined he was not wearing a seatbelt when he crashed, leading him to be thrown from the vehicle. VSP added that speeded contributed to the crash.
