YORK COUNTY, Va. — A York County substitute teacher is accused of assaulting a 12-year-old special needs student, and court documents are shining more light on what happened.
54-year-old Warren George Hyde is facing three counts of misdemeanor assault and battery, one felony count of cruelty to a child, and one felony count of maiming.
According to court documents, surveillance cameras captured the entire thing.
The video footage shows Hyde pushing the student to the ground and putting his foot on the child so he couldn’t move away, according to details outlined in new court documents.
The alleged assault happened Thursday inside the gym at Grafton Middle School.
Court documents describe an altercation between Hyde and the student that “multiple people” witnessed.
The paperwork says as the child laid on the ground, he threw his headphones at Hyde. Then, documents say, Hyde grabbed the child’s arm and dragged him across the gym floor before flinging him against a cinderblock wall.
According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, an administrator reported the incident to a school resource officer which prompted an investigation.
A spokesperson for the York County School Division said in a statement, Hyde is no longer a part of the division’s substitute pool and no longer employed by the division.
