YORK COUNTY, Va. — A 60-year-old bicyclist died after being struck in an intersection on Route 17 in York County Monday night, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).
The initial investigation reveals a Ford Expedition traveling south had a green light when it entered an intersection, hitting the bicyclist. Police said the driver of the Expedition "was unable to avoid striking the bicycle."
The bicyclist, Leroy Chatham of Yorktown, was rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
VSP said Chatham was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing when the crash happened.
The driver of the Expedition, a Newport News man, remained at the scene. Investigators determined neither speed nor alcohol contributed to the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
