William & Mary grad, former NFL star Darren Sharper sentenced to 18 years in prison

NEW ORLEANS (AP and WVEC) -- Former NFL star Darren Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in prison Thursday for drugging and raping women.

The graduate of the College of William & Mary was wearing orange prison garb, and his hands and feet were shackled when he arrived in court.

Sharper entered pleas of "guilty" or "no contest" in federal court in New Orleans, and state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada to charges arising from the allegations he drugged and raped women.

Prosecutors suggested a 9-year prison term for Sharper under a multi-jurisdictional plea deal, but in June, Judge Jane Triche Milazzo rejected it as too lenient.
