Watch out for jellyfish at the beach and in the water!

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Jellyfish season is here, and thousands of them can now be spotted in the Hampton Roads waterways.

"Make sure you look out before you go swimming, you should be able to see them easily," said Jordan Salyers from the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.

Salyers says the jellyfish become more visible with the warm summer temperatures.

"They usually prefer low flow, less turbidity, so we usually see them back on our bays, not so much at the Oceanfront," she explained.

Salyers says there are three types of jellyfish that are common to Hampton Roads, with the Atlantic Sea Nettle being the most common.

“It has long tentacles, it’s the one you are most likely to get stung by,” said Salyers.

Experts say that if you are stung by a jellyfish, you should immediately get out of water, and reach for some vinegar. Vinegar will neutralize the sting, so the tentacles can’t continue to sting you.

This year, jellyfish stings have been reported at First Landing State Park. Experts also say the bay water surrounding the Norfolk Yacht Club is also a hot spot.
