WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A William & Mary student was hit by an SUV that was driven by the president of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation on Thursday morning, the foundation confirmed.
A spokesperson for the City of Williamsburg says that around 8:15 a.m., a black Audi sport utility vehicle was driving east on Richmond Road when it struck a 21-year-old woman. The woman was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The City of Williamsburg’s medical director, Dr. Bryant Gray, was serving with the Williamsburg Fire Department Emergency Medical Services at the time of the incident and provided care on the scene and during transport.
William & Mary issued a statement on Thursday confirming the woman was one of the university's students.
In a statement to 13News Now, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation said:
"Our prayers and concerns are for the health and safety of the individual involved in a car accident with President [Cliff] Fleet on Richmond Road earlier this morning. Our thoughts are also with their family at this very difficult time.
"President Fleet and the Foundation are cooperating fully with law enforcement conducting the investigation and defer further comment on the situation to the Virginia State Police."
The Virginia State Police and the Williamsburg Police Department are investigating the crash. Richmond Road, between Boundary Street and the westbound side of Dawson Circle, is closed while the investigation is ongoing.
