WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A Suffolk man died in a Williamsburg crash Saturday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Capitol Landing Road and Jefferson Street, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya. The Williamsburg Police Department requested state police to investigate the crash.

Preliminary investigation found that Alan Smith, of Pittsford, New York, was driving a Toyota SUV on Jefferson Street when he arrived at the Capitol Landing Road intersection, which has a “No Left Turn” sign. He began to make a left turn and was struck by a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by Marcelino Manuel Johnson, 24, of the 5000 block of Huntclub Chase, Suffolk.

Johnson was transported to Riverside Doctor’s Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Smith was charged with reckless driving, Anaya stated. Alcohol was not a contributing factor, and it is unknown at this time if speed was a contributing factor.
