WWII-era biplane crashes in James City County

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A pilot was hurt after his small airplane crashed and flipped upside down in James City County on Monday, Virginia State Police said.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. at the Waltrip Williamsburg Executive Airport (formerly known as the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport). VSP said a 1943 Boeing Stearman A75N1 crashed and flipped upside down. The pilot, 56-year-old Kurt Muller of Williamsburg, was able to get out of the aircraft but had minor injuries.

The Boeing Stearman is a single-engine biplane that was built in the 1930s and 1940s and is often a staple of aerobatic acts in air shows.

The crash is currently under investigation.
