VSP rolls out initiative to reduce dangerous driving on I-64

The operation focuses on the four main causes of crashes in Virginia: distractions, impairment, speed and seat belt safety.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — In an effort to reduce dangerous driving behaviors on Interstate 64, some Virginia State Police divisions will be executing "Operation Diss-rupt" later this week.

In a release, VSP said its divisions in Appomattox, Chesapeake, Richmond and Salem will be conducting the traffic enforcement and safety initiative on the entire stretch of the interstate in Virginia on Thursday and Friday.

“This initiative is about getting back to the basics of traffic safety,” said Captain Gregory T. Mathias, VSP Chesapeake Division Commander. “We are asking Virginians to help state police ‘DISS-rupt’ the dangerous behaviors that put motorists and pedestrians at risk. Added patrols in the Chesapeake Division will be concentrated along I-64 in James City and York counties, as well as the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.”

The operation focuses on the four main causes of crashes in Virginia: distractions, impairment, speed and seat belt safety.

The initiative comes as VSP says there have been 674 people killed in traffic collisions in Virginia so far in 2023. There have also been 99 pedestrians struck and killed by vehicles.

VSP said it will be conducting "Operation DISS-rupt" on Interstate 95, Interstate 81 and Interstate 66 at a later time.
