RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Department of Emergency Management announced on Thursday that they received two awards of post-disaster funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
One award was received under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to address the impact of Hurricane Matthew, 2016, around the Commonwealth. The second award was from unallocated Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) funding from the 2017 grant cycle for two projects in Essex County.
“VDEM is committed to identifying, coordinating and securing all available funding that can assist localities and emergency response organizations to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the natural and man-made threats and disasters we face and experience in Virginia,” said State Coordinator of Emergency Management Jeff Stern.
VDEM administers federal funds on behalf of FEMA. The state provides 20 percent matching funds for the HMGP projects, which were awarded through a state competitive-grant process.
Chesapeake, Gloucester County, and Virginia Beach are jurisdictions receiving grant funds.
