NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is experiencing technical difficulties Friday, causing services to not be available.
The department said the outage was caused by a severed fiber optic line, affecting Virginia state agencies, DMV Customer Service Centers, online services and call center operations.
As of Friday afternoon, the Virginia DMV doesn't have an estimated time of restoration. Online services aren't available and Customer Service Centers closed for the day at 2 p.m.
Due to the outage, the Virginia DMV said hours for all Virginia DMV Customer Service Centers will be extended by one hour to 6 p.m. next Monday to Thursday.
Friday's outage marks the second in recent weeks. On May 24, WVEC 13News Now's General Manager Brian Gregory was at the counter at the DMV Hilltop location in Virginia Beach when the computer system started to crash a few minutes later.
Shortly afterward, a supervisor told the crowd of about 30 gathered for DMV services that there had been a statewide computer system issue affecting all Virginia DMV locations. She said the computer systems were down with no estimated time of being back online.
