VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia Aquarium staffers are mourning the loss of the Atlantic sturgeon that passed away Monday.
Aquarium officials say the sturgeon's health had been in decline over the past few weeks. A team of animal care professionals closely monitored the animal alongside veterinary staff around the clock.
The necropsy, an animal autopsy, is scheduled to happen Wednesday. Officials hope the necropsy will determine the cause of death and provide more information about the ancient species.
The Atlantic sturgeon was acquired from Maymont Nature Center in Richmond in November 2011. It outgrew its exhibit in Maymont, which necessitated the move to the Virginia Aquarium.
The Atlantic sturgeon is among the oldest fish species in the world.
In some cases, Atlantic sturgeon have reached a length of up to 14 ft. and can weigh up to 800 lbs.
