VDOT trucks involved in 3-vehicle crash in Southampton County

Two of the vehicles involved are VDOT trucks, the other is a tractor-trailer.

SOUTHAMPTON CO., Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning.

Police said the accident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Southampton Parkway westbound, on Route 718.

Two of the vehicles involved are VDOT trucks, the other is a tractor-trailer.

State Police said one of the VDOT trucks was stopped in the right lane for pothole repairs, while the other VDOT truck was also stopped in the right lane with an activated arrow board to alert drivers of the lane closure and to direct them to merge into the left lane.

A couple of hundred feet behind those vehicles was a third VDOT truck that wasn't involved in the crash. That truck had a sign message that stated, "ROAD WORK AHEAD RIGHT LANE CLOSED."

Investigators said the driver of the tractor-trailer passed by that first VDOT truck on the left lane, then merged back into the right lane. The driver of the tractor trailer allegedly looked down at his bluetooth device, then looked back up and proceeded to ram into the second VDOT truck, causing it to overturn, and then hit the third VDOT truck.

The driver of the overturned VDOT truck was flown to Richmond with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the third VDOT truck and a passenger inside it were both taken by ground to a local hospital.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was issued a summons for reckless driving.
