NORFOLK, Va. — More than 10,000 vehicles, 700,000 tons of salt, and 2,000 crew members are on standby in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Department of Transportation has it all ready for potential snow and ice this winter.
A $220 million budget has been set aside to make sure our roads are clear and keep traffic accidents at a minimum.
There’s another resource, though, that you can use to stay on top of snow-covered roads in Virginia. It'll show you everything you need before getting in the car, from the interstate to your neighborhood.
First, visit the brand new VDOT website, then scroll down to "weather."
Once you’re there, scroll down to the "winter driving section," then "snow removal," and you’ll see the "online snowplow tracker tool."
The tool allows you to track snowplows across the state in real-time, using an interactive map.
The legend, for example, can tell you where active snowplows are. You can also distinguish between VDOT trucks and hired contractors.
You also have access to live VDOT cameras that appear on the map. If you take a look at those, you'll be able to see the road condition firsthand.
Not only is the tracking tool a convenient resource for the winter that’ll save you a traffic headache every time it snows. It’s also a one-stop shop for getting in touch with VDOT.
If you want to report a road hazard or reach out to VDOT on social media, you’ve got all the links and phone numbers just a click away on the website.
