RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia's sales tax holiday, which usually takes place the first Friday of August, will instead be happening this upcoming weekend after being revived by Virginia lawmakers.
The law putting the sales tax holiday in place expired on July 31 of this year. Why did it expire? Dr. Benjamin Melusky, an associate political science professor at Old Dominion University, explained back in July that "the state basically just plum forgot."
Since then, Virginia lawmakers in the House and Senate agreed on a new budget that reinstated the holiday, among other budget allocations.
Governor Glenn Youngkin signed the new Virginia budget, making no amendments to the budget proposal.
This year, the holiday is rescheduled for October 20 through 22, over a month after most public schools in the area went into session.
The tax-free weekend lets people buy school supplies, clothing, and hurricane preparedness equipment without having to pay sales tax.
Certain Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products were also tax-free, like washing machines and air conditioners.
