State trooper dies while serving search warrant

Trooper Lucas Dowell died after he was shot Monday night while serving a search warrant in Cumberland County.

FARMVILLE, Va. — A Virginia State Police trooper has been killed in the line of duty. 

Trooper Lucas Dowell died after he was shot Monday night while serving a search warrant in Cumberland County.

State police said a tactical team went into a home when a man inside opened fire.

Police returned fire, hitting the man. He died at the scene. Investigators have not released the suspect's name at this time.

“This is an extremely difficult day for the State Police,” said VSP Superintendent Colonel Gary T. Settle in a news release. “We are humbled by Lucas’ selfless sacrifice and grateful for his dedicated service to the Commonwealth. He will forever be remembered by his State Police Family for his great strength of character, tenacity, valor, loyalty and sense of humor.”

Dowell is survived by his parents and sister. 

No other troopers were injured in the shooting.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Ralph Northam said, "The passing of Trooper Dowell is a great loss to the Commonwealth. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends who knew Trooper Dowell best. We are grateful for his dedication to the safety of our communities, and for all of those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others."
