RICHMOND, Va. — A proposed bill in Virginia's General Assembly could help fund the renovation of aging schools and the construction of new schools across the Commonwealth.

Senate Bill 14 looks to raise local sales tax by 1% to fund school construction and renovation.

However, voters of each locality would have to approve the increase through a referendum. Under the current law, only nine municipalities have approval from the General Assembly to charge such a tax, with only Gloucester and Northampton counties being authorized in the greater Hampton Roads region.

The Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee has advanced the bill, and it will now head to the full Senate for a vote.
